El trabajo como redactora de una revista lo es todo para la introvertida Dorine Douglas. Un día, la perversa redactora jefe decide recortar gastos y propone a Dorine que trabaje desde su casa a través del correo electrónico. Pero Dorine añora la oficina y, a la vez que monta en el sótano de su casa un despacho, mata accidentalmente a uno de sus compañeros. Al quedar impune el crimen, Dorine alimenta nuevas ansias criminales que le permiten ornamentar su nueva oficina con los cadáveres de sus compañeros.

Cyril y Fiona son una pareja casada que viajan a una ciudad costera tropical sin nombre para seguir sus fantasías sexuales. Allí se encuentran con otra pareja, Catherine, Hugh y sus tres hijos. Hugh es un fotógrafo que se especializa en fotografías de mujeres campesinas desnudas. Comienzan las relaciones Cyril / Catherine y Hugh / Fiona.

At the beginning of a nightly Alcoholics Anonymous meeting, Jim seems particularly troubled. His sponsor encourages him to talk that night, the first time in seven months, so he does - and leaves the meeting right after. As Jim wanders the night, searching for some solace in his old stomping grounds, bars and parks where he bought drugs, the meeting goes on, and we hear the stories of survivors and addicts - some, like Louis, who claim to have wandered in looking for choir practice, who don't call themselves alcoholic, and others, like Joseph, whose drinking almost caused the death of his child - as they talk about their lives at the meeting

A directionless teenager (Aesha Waks) becomes involved with a headstrong runaway (Summer Phoenix) and her drug-dealing brother (Sam Rockwell).
