Alexandra Kulak (Belarus: Аляксандра Кулак; born 29 January, 19990; Vitebsk, Belarus) is a Belarus documentary filmmaker, director of photography, editor and media/fashion artist.
In 2015, she graduated from Saint Petersburg University Culture and Arts’ program for photographer‐filmmakers. Since 2014 she has also been studying at the department of cinematography of the Moscow Film School. Her work as director and cinematographer include the short films CHRISTMAS (co‐directed with Ruslan Fedotow, 2014) and OK GOOD (documentary musical, 2015). Her award-winning documentary SALAMANCA (co‐dir. Ruslan Fedotow, 2015) premiered in IDFA and was an official selection in international festivals throughout the world. Her film QUICKSILVER CHRONICLES (2019) had its world premiere at Visions du Réel - Nyon.

It’s 2020 and Minsk, the capital city of Belarus, is overflowing with anti-government protests. A dreamy figure – Mara – takes us on a journey alongside the protesting crowds. Mara’s symbolic presence is a stark contrast to the harsh reality of the street. There is a determination to Mara, but also a fragility – as if her persona reflects the collective mental state of the protesters witnessing their dream for freedom turn into a nightmare.

The vast territories beside the Pinega river in northwest Russia are covered by woods and inhabited by more wild animals than people, besides a few villages who live mostly from the forests, fishing, and gardening. Society here can only be described as a matriarchy, where beliefs, spells, and traditional rituals are passed down the female line. Musical contributions from village residents serve as a leitmotif for the film: unsteady renditions of old songs that reveal performances belonging to a distant past. The population of these communities has aged considerably — but the place itself is timeless.

In a country where football exists more in the headlines of scandalous tabloids and newly built, shiny stadiums-palaces, in parallel, the invisible life of raw and non-program football, yard boxes and football fields arranged in the most unexpected places is rapidly developing.
