Ibu Budi
Hamidah, who is Budi’s childhood friend and his sweetheart as a grown up, has to leave him to treat her illness. Left without any news of his love, Budi is disappointed and becomes a reckless man who plays around with women and goes drinking in nightclubs. Then he becomes a police fugitive after a fight with another man
Bram and Nona marry without her parent’s approval, as she is already arranged to marry Paul. The life of the husband and wife is only supported by Bram’s small salary so they live in the slums, which is realistically depicted. They also have problems with Nien, Bram’s old unmarried sister.
Puspa
Mbok Puspo’s cafe, at the edge of Kalimas, under Jembatan Merah or “Red Bridge”, is a meeting place for many. Mbok Puspo also sells rags for additional income while her adopted daughter, Sudiasih, runs the cafe and is the shining beauty of the place. The regulars are Ngawang, a small time thief who fails to make his wife happy; Kenanga, who becomes a prostitute to spite her husband; Siswanto, a student who does not have the courage to confess his love to Sudiasih; Pungguk the painter; a civil servant, and a postman. The love stories between Siswanto and Sudiasih; and Ngawang and Kenang are the central plots. Seeing Siswanto and Sudiasih’s love, Ngawang and Kenanga also find each other. Meanwhile, Mbok Puspo is in a dilemma when she receives a letter from her child, Sri Bidari, who was adopted by a rich family.
Bing works as a radio broadcaster in a private-owned radio station, “Undur-Undur”, with Benyamin S. His work is causing relationship problems with his wife so he finds relief with one of his fans, Anna Mathovani. Bing helps her debut as a singer and realises his mistake when her boyfriend shows up. Luckily his wife misses him and they reconcile. The appearance of singers and famous groups in the film seems to be intended as a selling point.
The story revolves around the Minangkabau Hanafi and his friend, the half-French half-Minangkabau Corrie du Bussée. Although Hanafi is Minangkabau and a Muslim, he considers European culture to be superior and has many European friends.
Doel, a child growing up in a Betawi society, who is trying to break the pragmatism of the society that considers the Betawi people to be conservative by getting as high an education as possible. After his father's death in an accident, he and his mother becomes a seller to survive.

Mak Buyung
Drawing from the novel, lenong (play) and the previous film (Njai Dasima I), this new film version has heightened erotic scenes considered the boldest for its time. But as mentioned by the director, the eroticism is meant to reveal the psychological aspects of the characters. Unlike the previous version, that mainly highlights conflict between love and witchcraft, this one features social and psychological conflicts. For example, how Dasima feels like an outsider with Edward Williams’s friends, or how she prefers leaving their house to live with her maid in the village. It also shows more background of the Samiun and Hayati characters - Samiun is a black market trader with a lot of debts and Hayati is a woman obsessed with gambling to get rich. When his debts are due and he is unable to pay, Samiun asks his friend, Puasa, to “rob” him while he is returning to their village with Dasima.
When their children fail to come home, their parents start to worry. Due to their own neglect and unfulfilled promises, the children, Maria and Suzy, are getting some help from an old man, their former teacher, to go to the zoo and other entertainment centers by themselves. When the police are called, the kids are quickly found and returned to the parents, but the teacher is so heavily shaken by this experience that he admits himself to a mental asylum.
While studying in the Philippines, Cokorde Gde Rai meets Angelo Reyes, who is planning to go to Indonesia to enhance his knowledge as a botanist. Before going to Bali, Cokorde takes him to sightsee, to Borobudur and other places. After a few days in Bali, Reyes’ girlfriend, Liza Presler, arrives. But there is a problem as Reyes has fallen for Aryani, sister of Suryati, who is the girlfriend of Cokorde. Liza tries to stand in between Reyes and Aryani, and she fails. At the end, Liza gets Raka instead, who initially proposed to Aryani, but failed as she had chosen Reyes.
Istri Kusumo
Kusumo lives happily with his wife and his two kids; Tati and Toto, in Surabaya. Their happiness is interrupted when Kusumo meets Maryati; a widow from Yogya. They meet when she falls victim to some pickpockets when she is shopping. They decide to marry and Kusumo leaves his family, without telling them anything. Sulaiman; a friend of Kusumo, brings him back to his senses and succeeds in persuading Kusumo to return to Surabaya. On the way, Kusumo crashes his car. When his first wife visits him in hospital, he asks for forgiveness before he dies.

Tuty
Through Poppy and her boyfriend, Hasan, Elina meets Abdullah and becomes his lover. Then Elina starts to lead a wayward life. Her older sister, Tuty, tries to stop her but Elina chooses to continue her relationship and gets married. Then Tuty's warning comes true, as Abdullah is irresponsible. After Elina gets a divorce, she tries to find Tuty again but fails. But in the end, the two siblings manage to reunite.
Grandmother
Three sisters—Nunung (Chitra Dewi), Nana (Mieke Wijaya) and Nenny (Indriati Iskak)—are being raised by their grandmother (Fifi Young) in Jakarta after their mother's death. Though the sisters' father Sukandar (Hassan Sanusi (id)) lives with them, he is too involved in his own work to pay them heed. While the sisters are out with Nana's boyfriend Herman (Bambang Irawan), their grandmother tells Sukandar than she will not live to see Nunung, already aged 29, marry. He agrees to invite his colleagues to the house. When they come several days later, Nunung impresses all present with her piano-playing and singing. However, the men are all too old, and Nunung's grandmother insists that Sukandar find a younger man. Nenny, overhearing the conversation, suggests that they hold a party; this too is a failure, as Nunung takes no interest in the festivities.
Sriwardhani becomes a singer at "Happy World", after her father is killed by a gang of robbers. There she meets Edy Sumarno and they get married without Edy's mother consent. When Edy gets sick, Sri asks her mother-in-law for money to buy medicine. But the mother asks Sri to divorce her son for the money. Sri accepts this for her husband's sake. When Edy recovers, his mother arranges a marriage for him. However, the marriage does not work well and his wife dies in a car accident. Edy's mother regrets her decision and tells him to go look for Sri again.
Tarmina is a selfish wife. She asks Hadi for a divorce after he goes bankrupt. She leaves him and daughter, Juriah, and remarries a tycoon. One day, the second husband has an accident near where Hadi is standing. Tarmina accuses Hadi of causing the accident. When the second husband learns about Tarmina's unkind nature, he divorces her. Then Tarmina marries a third time with a restaurant owner, but not long after, she divorces again. When Hadi is released from jail, he returns to a happy life with his daughter. In desperation, Tarmina tries to return to them. But she realizes that she has committed so many wrongs to her husband and child. Instead, she ends her life by plunging into the river.
Sugiati
Sugiati loves all of her children, Achmad, Idris, Sumadi and Supinah. Sumadi receives the most attention as Subagio, his father, often blames him. But Subagio leads a double life as a thief. To defend his father, Sumadi takes the blame for his father’s crime. He is sent to exile for his confession. Subagio feels guilty, becomes ill and finally passes away. After the death of Subagio, the children refuse to take care of Sugiati who ends up in a nursing home. Upon his return from exile, Sumadi is appalled by his siblings’ treatment of their mother and settles the score with his brothers and sister.
The film featured 12 keroncong hits and is considered as the first musical film in Indonesia

R.A. Rusmini
Featuring the clash between modern thinking against traditional conservatism, the story has the troubled romance between the noble princess, RA Rusmini, and the peasant, Bachtiar. This film ends with compromise, that there is nothing wrong with either modernity or tradition.
