El capitán Maddocks nunca ascenderá más allá del grado de capitán, por un error que cometió en el pasado. El teniente McQuade es un pisaverde que ha caído bajo el mando del duro capitán y parece no ser capaz de hacer nada a derechas; el teniente también tiene problemas con Tracey, pero serán los indios renegados los que le enseñarán la importancia de hacer las cosas bien y seguir las órdenes.

También se realizó un remake casi un cuarto de siglo más tarde titulado "Where the Boys Are" (1984), pero sin ninguna repercusión crítica ni comercial.

Ralph Burton is a miner who is trapped for several days as a result of a cave-in. When he finally manages to dig himself out, he realizes that all of mankind seems to have been destroyed in a nuclear holocaust. He travels to New York City only to find it deserted. Making a life for himself there, he is flabbergasted to eventually find Sarah Crandall, who also managed to survive. Together, they form a close friendship until the arrival of Benson Thacker who has managed to pilot his small boat into the city's harbor. At this point, tensions rise between the three, particularly between Thacker, who is white, and Burton, who is black.

Following a live orchestra opening, emcee Eddie Garr greets the audience and tells them about his trip to Los Angeles, where out-of-work actors are always 'acting' while in their service-industry jobs. What follows is a cavalcade of wild and wacky performances.
