In a hidden location, pregnant teenage girls await the birth of their babies in secret. Some want to put their mistake behind them as soon as possible, but Katja, herself an orphan, clearly wants something different: she longs to have her own little baby. During the long wait, the girls share each others joys and sorrows. They form close friendships and distract themselves with strange games, until the bubble bursts, and Katja becomes painfully aware of the plans that the nuns are making behind their backs. Los ángeles tienen que “crear” a un ser humano que sea lo suficientemente inteligente como para encontrar las Tablas de la Ley; alguien que esté dispuesto a sacrificar su vida con el fin de restituir las Tablas al Cielo. Así que los ángeles idean un plan ingenioso, a la vez que despiadado, para lograr su objetivo. El plan toma forma cuando en la Tierra se encuentran dos hombres, aparentemente por casualidad. Uno de ellos es Onno Quist, un lingüista excéntrico, hijo de un antiguo Primer Ministro. El otro es Max Delius, hijo de un padre nazi y de una madre judía.

Marian and Ido are married and have a 16-year-old daughter, Pinkie. Marian and Ido's marriage has become boring. Ido is a conservative and neat furniture manufacturer, but secretly starts a relationship with the beautiful Emma, his secretary. When Marian discovers this, she offers him a choice: stay with her or move on with Emma. Ido cannot make this choice, so Marian throws him out. Ido moves in with Ida, but continues to interfere intensively with Pinkie, who to his horror becomes friends with Wim, one of his Turkish workers.

Maria Garcia (Carmen Maura) is a television journalist and she's about to be a single mother. Her career foremost in her mind, she doesn't slow down even for a minute, despite her pregnancy. She is, however, taking Lamaze classes and is quite competently coping with the romantic attentions of a man she's not very interested in. It's not at all irrelevant that her news beat includes stories on terrorism, the greenhouse effect, pollution and genetic engineering, because when her baby's due date comes and goes, she starts hearing from her infant from in the womb. It is telling her that it and many other babies are refusing to be born into such a horrible world. She learns that this is true, and that the children born through induced labor are dying.
