En la víspera del año 2000, Beverly Moody (Gemma Brooke Allen), una desgarbada huérfana de 12 años, descubre un casete roto en el que sus padres adolescentes grabaron canciones que les gustaban. Beverly se ha criado con su abuela Gail (Julie Bowen), quien también fue madre adolescente y a la que le resulta doloroso hablar de su difunta hija.
