Director
Juan flees Madrid and an incestuous relationship with his sister, Ana, working at a mine on the Andalucian coast. When his friendship with Rosario, a local shop girl, becomes romance, Ana shows up wanting to rekindle their affair. He resists at first, but she stays, asserting that Juan is the only man she can ever love. Juan distances himself from Rosario. The mine has problems: high cancer rates in the area caused by poorly stored radioactive waste. A foreign safety engineer, Petersen, tries to connect with Ana, is rebuffed, but lets her stay in his sea-front bungalow. Juan seeks her out to demand she leave, only to argue with Petersen. Death, desire, and longing play out.

In 1976 an anarchist exiled in Paris returned to Spain. He feels disappointed, comparing the anarchism of Barcelona in 1936 and the situation of Western democracy today. it is the story of 'a long night' that ends, a night that he understands as dictatorship and repression. A night in which ideas, sensations and memories intermingle.

In Variations, Angelidi creatively activates her knowledge of the history of the cinematic image and connects it to a global artistic language of an alternative, poetic cinema, while still preserving the peculiarities of her own tradition and, especially, her personal concerns. Angelidi -who appeared with the film Idees Fixes - Dies Irae (Variations on the Same Theme) in 1977 is classified among the filmmakers who emerged in the seventies with films that were "different", from an aesthetic viewpoint, and who proposed "another" kind of narrative
