The film tells the story of a couple, Rais (Agus Kuncoro) and Rani (Kristina) who have been in a relationship since their teens when they both live in a suburb. At the edge of the river they built a stage, as a form of their dreams for the future. At that time Rani had started to become a dangdut singer even though it was only for the village class. Their dreams both seem to really be like a stage in life, which can change fate from gray to luminous, Rani transforms into a famous singer, after going through various career-making struggles. Meanwhile, Rais, it turns out that it is very difficult to get happiness in his life.

Newlyweds Merry (Lydia Kandou) and Andi (Ray Sahetapy) have to say goodbye to Anita’s parents who are going abroad for a holiday. Aunt and Uncle (Zainal Abidin, Ida Kusumah) have been asked to watch over them. While Merry and Andi are at the airport to see the parents off, a sweet looking girl comes up and kisses Andi and gives him a message for another young woman. Confusion ensues. A Dutch landlord, Van Hallen, murders his best friend. Naning’s mercenary kidnaps Jamilla. And libel is spread that Gobang is the kidnapper, leading to his arrest. Nio comes to avenge his father’s death and frees Gobang from jail. But Nio is killed by Jupri, who in turn, is killed by Gobang. Then Van Hallen is killed. Watched by Jamilla, Gobang takes Nio’s body away.

Kadir and Suryani bury Ningsih near the house and are then haunted by Ningsih’s spirit, who also possesses Lisa.

The film’s title seems to have little connection to the story, a comedy revolving around Emon and the comedy group, Bagito. Emon, son of a rich family, returns from the Netherlands and falls in love with Vina. But Miing, Didin, and Unang are also in love with her. So the four men compete against each other, but Vina is already engaged to a man who has just returned from America.

Indro has to arrange Tina and Santi’s living space, so that he won’t be suspected of anything. More comedy arises when Santi’s fanatical mother also visits. Then Kasino drives Dono’s girlfriend and the car crashes. The car manages to be sold but then the buyer demands his money back. Dono has to hold a boxing match with the buyer.

Because of his wife’s encouragement, Prabowo enters a dangerous business and is eventually imprisoned. While waiting for his trial, his business partner, Wahyuni the divorcee, whom he also loves, bails him out. So Rini attempts to become a photographer, by following her boyfriend, a tour guide in Bali. There is another character, a journalist, who comes in and out of the film, and functions as a commentator and witness of their lives. The dialogue veers on philosophical messages as director, Slamet Rahardjo, tries to represent both the lower and upper classes, mixing his narrative style with realism.

Badrun’s family often clashes with their maids, as his mother is too strict. One day, the family, and their maids, have to stay at an international hotel, where they receive special treatment. As a result, the maids are curious to know the secrets of the hotel maids. Various funny events occur, since the hotel maids are more educated, and Badrun finally realises his wrong attitude towards the maids.
