El líder parlamentario rebelde Thomas Fairfax, miembro de la aristocracia, proyectaba una reforma moderada de la monarquía, pero su lugarteniente Oliverio Cromwel, que era un fanático dominado por el ansia de poder, exigió la ejecución del rey y la instauración de la República.
