Durante la II Guerra Mundial un piloto americano que se ha unido a las Fuerzas Aéreas Británicas se recupera de sus heridas en un hospital de Jerusalén. A través de su jefe de escuadrón conoce a Sarah, una joven judía de origen sefardí. David y Sarah se enamoran prácticamente de inmediato, pero la familia de ella se opone al romance, especialmente porque David es hijo de un ministro de la religión protestante.
