Estamos en la Alemania nazi, pero sin casi referencias políticas salvo que las ambientaciones de ciertos números musicales están localizadas en Italia, España y Japón. Cuenta la historia de una artista de variedades que triunfa con sus obras musicales, donde canta y levanta pierna con mucha habilidad. Cansada de tanta gira huye de su manager en tren. Por casualidad queda atrapada en una estación alpina en pleno invierno, donde conocerá a dos ingenieros que trabajan en un nuevo trazado del ferrocarril. Uno de ellos suspira por una mujer a la antigua, el otro por una mujer a la moderna. ¿Con quién se quedará nuestra starlette?
Charlie, a very gifted, young acrobat, cannot find employment. A dancer and colleague, whom he trained, has gotten him a job as a stagehand at a vaudeville theatre. After a number of chaotic events and some highs and lows - none of which ever discourage him - his hour arrives: an act can't go on and "Akrobat schööön" can finally make his grand entrance.

Forced to resume her disrupted medical career, she worked in a Swiss clinic but, without the knowledge of the chief surgeon, Vera ordered a risky operation to be performed and was thereafter fired. Penniless, she then works in Spanish nightclubs in order to provide for herself and her child. After many years, she runs into her friend Frank again in one of these nightclubs...

The body of an unknown beautiful woman is fished out of the river and leaves the policemen wondering what drove the girl to such a grisly fate. The film then flashes back to months before, showing the torrid love affair between a young cabaret singer and a rich playboy that ultimately results in tragedy for the girl.
