Dawn es una chica que no tiene amigos y que es víctima del "bullying" que le hacen un grupo de compañeras del instituto. Ella se hace cortes en la piel como una manera de aliviar la frustración que experimenta. Cuando un profesor lo acaba descubriendo y la directora cita a los padres, ellos ,lo único que hacen es eludir su responsabilidad. La tensión en casa de la chica es cada vez más insostenible, con una madre tiránica que quiere aplicar soluciones contundentes y un padre que elude su responsabilidad. Más adelante, Dawn se hace amiga de una chica que también tiene problemas y que va una psiquiatra. Dawn acabará yendo a esta psiquiatra, que le ayudará a gestionar sus conflictos.

Un trabajador de la línea de crisis investiga a una mujer maltratada que llama a la línea directa proclamando su venganza contra su ex-marido abusivo. En un segundo piso, una adolescente del centro de crisis que se negó a ayudarle es atacada por su novio.

It is a very hot summer in the city as the well known detectives of the 87th Precinct investigate serial rapes and a mysterious homicide (which do not appear to be connected). The women getting raped appear to be raped by a rapist who has raped them earlier and who was not caught. Detective Eileen Burke, who is working together with detectives Carella, Meyer and Brown, goes undercover and pretends to be one of the women who was raped earlier in order to lure out the rapist. Her boyfriend, Det. Kling, is not happy with her assignment.

Kelly keeps getting into trouble with the police. Her mother agrees to her going into a juvenile detention center overnight. She is kept there for much longer. During her incarceration, she is assaulted by inmates and abused by the system.

Sara lives in a small town where everybody knows everybody and her life is an open book. Left with the care of her family home, she has trouble meeting the mortgage payments and her ex-boyfriend is the bank manager attempting to foreclose. When she takes in boarders to meet expenses, she unwittingly rents a room to an international criminal hiding out from a bounty hunter, John Flynn. When the bounty hunter shows up, the criminal takes a hike. Reluctantly admitting that he might need her help, Flynn agrees to make Sara a partner for half the bounty if they catch the missing man in time. What follows is a wild ride where Sara discovered that she is anything but boring and predictable.
