La lucha de liberación por parte del ejército sandinista contra el régimen de Anastasio Somoza en Nicaragua. La película recoge algunos de los puntos culminantes de esa lucha en León, ciudad próxima a Managua, la capital del país, y primer territorio liberado. En su rodaje participaron algunos miembros del ejército sandinista, así como numerosos habitantes de León que colaboraron estrechamente con la guerrilla.
