En el Vietnam rural del siglo XIX, la joven May, de 14 años, se convierte en la tercera esposa del adinerado hacendado Hung. Pronto aprenderá que solo puede mejorar su posición reafirmándose como una mujer capaz de dar a luz a un varón. Cuando se queda embarazada, las esperanzas que tiene May de ascender en la escala social se convierten en una tentadora posibilidad. Phong creció en un pequeño pueblo en el centro de Vietnam, el menor de seis hijos. Desde que era un niño, Phong sintió que era una niña con el cuerpo de un niño que no coincide. No fue hasta que se mudó a Hanoi para ir a la universidad a los 20 años cuando Phong descubrió que no era el único en el mundo con esta situación. Su sueño de "encontrarse a sí misma" cambiando físicamente el sexo se convierte en realidad varios años después. La película sigue la lucha de Phong durante estos años, con extractos de un íntimo diario de video, junto con encuentros con familiares, amigos y médicos, todos los cuales deben aceptar la determinación de Phong para convertirse en una chica completa.

Like many young men in this region on the main heroin route from Laos to China, they’re addicts, and they have HIV. Thi wants to kick his habit. Trung just wants to die. “With or Without Me ” is an intimate, tragicomic portrayal of two guys strung out at the edge of the map of a country struggling with drug use, and of the wives, family, doctors and friends trying to pull them back from the brink.
