Verano de 1954: La Unión Soviética empieza a liberar a sus prisioneros de guerra. Entre ellos está Richard, el padre de Matthias, un niño de once años apasionado por el fútbol, que vive con su madre y sus hermanos en una ciudad minera de Alemania del Este. Durante estos años, el niño ha sustituido a su padre por el futbolista Helmut Rahn, el cual a su vez lo ha tomado bajo su protección. El regreso de Richard, destrozado por tantos años de cautiverio, ensombrece la apacible vida de la familia. Por otra parte, tiene serias dificultades para adaptarse a las condiciones de vida de la postguerra. Además, está a punto de empezar en Berna (Suiza) la Copa del Mundo, pero mientras Matthias espera con entusiasmo el acontecimiento, para Richard, el fútbol no tiene ningún interés.

Set during the rise of the Nazi regime, Elisabeth Maurer and Hans Wieland enjoy successful careers as actors in Berlin. Confident in her career, Elisabeth, who is Jewish, ignores the advice of a colleague to leave Germany in the face of increasing anti-Semitism. Believing that he can protect her if she becomes his wife, Hans convinces Elisabeth to marry him. In the following years, as Hans's career thrives, Elisabeth awaits the end of the Nazi terror which bars her from public life. When the situation worsens in 1938 with the Kristallnacht pogrom, Elisabeth decides to leave the country, but Hans, who still believes he can protect her, convinces her to stay with him.

Vera Meiners' life was sweet but unfortunately for her, it was not to last. Her husband, Jan, left her after she met a former lover in a harmless friendly meeting. Forced to resume her disrupted medical career, she worked in a Swiss clinic but, without the knowledge of the chief surgeon, Vera ordered a risky operation to be performed and was thereafter fired. Penniless, she then works in Spanish nightclubs in order to provide for herself and her child. After many years, she runs into her friend Frank again in one of these nightclubs...
