Una vez devuelto el tamaño normal a sus hijos, el despistado científico Wayne Szalinski (Rick Moranis) reanuda sus investigaciones, pero en el sentido inverso: experimenta con un rayo capaz de aumentar el tamaño de las moléculas. Un famoso contrabandista promete a su padre, cuando éste está a punto de fallecer, convertirse en un hombre decente y devolver la honra al nombre de la familia. Pero naturalmente, el paso a la honradez no le resultará fácil y tendrá que enfrentarse a parientes, amigos y enemigos.

Brian Flanagan (Tom Cruise), un joven ambicioso recién licenciado del ejército, trabaja como camarero en un local de copas de Nueva York para costearse los estudios. Gracias a los consejos de su jefe Douglas Coughlin (Brian Brown), se convierte en la atracción del local. Pero él aspira a abrir su propio local con el nombre de "Coktails y Sueños". Para conseguir el dinero necesario se va a Jamaica a trabajar de camarero. Allí conoce a Jordan Mooney (Elisabeth Shue), una ingenua joven que está de vacaciones en la isla.

This is a splendid little sleeper of a movie. Ernie Kovacs was one of the giants of early television. I think he would be pleased with the way Jeff Goldbloom captures his wonky personality. Melody Anderson also distills that of Edie Adams. There is a very basic heart tugging story about the search for Kovacs' two abducted daughters. But at the same time the film is funny --- Cloris Leachman is a hoot as Kovacs impossible mom --- and has many of the offbeat and innovative qualities of the old Kovacs show itself.

Blaise Dietz (Patty Duke Astin) plays the wife of police officer Blaise Dietz (Frederic Forrest), who wants to join a special investigative unit. Forrest is denied this position on the basis of information concerning his wife. The information, which reveals a dicey extramarital affair, was culled from a department surveillance file that was supposed to have been destroyed by court order. Blaise battles through legal channels to expose the police force's illegal actions, even as she and her husband suffer the innuendoes and cold shoulders from his fellow officers.
