Cuando la NASA se da cuenta de que los rusos están a punto de conseguir llevar a un hombre a la Luna, la agencia comienza a entrenar a un astronauta para adelantar a los rusos. Los astronautas candidatos a ser el primer hombre en pisar la luna son Lee Stegler (James Caan), Chiz (Robert Duvall) y Rick (Michael Murphy). Entre Lee y Chiz existe una pequeña rivalidad compartida por sus esposas. Olvidando su relativa inexperiencia, Lee es el elegido por la NASA. Olvidando sus diferencias Chiz comienza a instruirle en como sobrevivir en el espacio. Pero los entrenamientos son detenidos repentinamente cuando se descubre que una nave rusa, el Vostok, está maniobrando para preparar el alunizaje. No hay tiempo de más preparación y Lee se hunde. Si llega a la Luna deberá permanecer allí todo un año en una estación lunar hasta que la cápsula del Apolo pueda acudir a rescatarle.

Wanting to follow in his late father's footsteps, eager reformer Steve Brewster (Rex Reason) runs for mayor of a small Montana town but is forced to flee and join a gang of notorious outlaws after he's provoked into killing two corrupt officials in self-defense. Gang leader Hammer (Emile Meyer) takes Steve in, and Steve falls for his daughter, Susan (Beverly Garland), but his loyalties are divided when he's appointed marshal of his hometown.
Curtis Parker
Nobody has an easy time of it in the costume actioner Shark River. Wanted for murder, Clay Webley (Warren Stevens) and his wounded cellmate Curtis Parker (Robert Cunningham) hack their way through the Florida swampland. With the help of Clay's brother Dan (Steve Cochran), Clay is able to elude the authorities, but Parker dies of a snakebite. Subsisting on alligator meat, Dan and Clay make their way to the tiny cabin inhabited by widowed Jane Daughterty (Carole Mathews), her mother-in-law, and her son Johnny (Spencer Fox). The brothers rest here awhile, formulating plans to cross the Gulf of Mexico and head for Cuba.
