Tommy es un joven holgazán que vive en un apartamento destartalado, no tiene prisa por nada y considera que la vida está hecha para ser vivida. Sin embargo, su situación cambia abruptamente cuando vuelve con su insufrible ex-novia Jean. Durante una de sus frecuentes peleas domésticas, Jean se cae accidentalmente, se golpea la cabeza y muere.
