Basada en un hecho real que tuvo lugar en el año 1981 cuando varias chicas jóvenes aparecieron muertas a lo largo de los estados de California, Washington y Oregón. Al parecer las víctimas eran escogidas al azar por un psicópata que ha decidido iniciar una cadena de violaciones y asesinatos. Lo único que sabe el inspector encargado del caso es que los homicidios han sido perpetrados siempre en las inmediaciones de la autopista I-5, que recorre dichos estados, y que el móvil es puramente sexual.
