The Black Audio Film Collective’s seventh film envisioned the death and life of the African American revolutionary as a seven part study in iconography as narrated by novelist Toni Cade Bambara and actor Giancarlo Espesito. The stylized tableaux vivants that memorialise Malcolm’s life referenced the early 20th century funeral photography of James Van der Zee’s The Harlem Book of the Dead and the elemental static cinematography of Sergei Paradjanov’s The Colour of Pomegranates.

Nocturne is a taut chamber drama, set in a musty suburban estate to which a pretty but drab-looking woman returns upon the death of her mother, who in flashback we discover was a fiercely proper and dominating woman. Eichhorn's depressed reveries are abruptly interrupted with the unexpected arrival of a pair of hitchhikers, amoral, free-spirited young lesbian lovers seeking shelter from the rain.

This situation comedy revolves around Emma who has just left her husband and moved with her daughter Jenny to live with her lover, middle class Diana. Diana, a child welfare doctor, has yet to come to terms with the changes that this will entail. Emma has an unthinking husband and Diana, a demanding neighbour, both of whom find themselves at Diana's while she's out. Add to this a Black woman who has travelled across town with her two children and a dog and you can imagine the confusion that results. Based on interviews with over 30 women about their experiences of motherhood, this sit-com manages to capture all the traumas and confessions which can face various women during one day.
