An American couple, on the verge of adopting a baby, goes on an Italian vacation — an opportunity to reconnect before the new addition arrives. Everything is picture-perfect; the epitome of a European baby moon, when things begin to spiral out of control. On the way to dinner, they get their rental car stuck in a ditch and are stranded in rural nowhere in a downpour. These two Americans, who are used to being catered to, are now in a foreign land without service, an Italian language comprehension of about zero, and clear relationship turmoil that could explode at any minute. Fear obviously takes over.

Una pareja perfecta alquila una casa de vacaciones en una isla soleada de Italia. La realidad no está a la altura de sus expectativas cuando se dan cuenta de que la piscina de la casa está estropeada. Ignorando que la isla sufre escasez de agua, piden que alguien la arregle. Elsa is seventy and has five empty hives. The bees are gone like her husband. One morning he finds Amin, a sixteen-year-old boy who has escaped from an immigration center, hiding in the garage. The police are looking for him. Elsa hosts him in exchange for help.

Lena is seven months pregnant and she's ready to sell the baby in her belly. Ermanno agrees to pretend to be the father. Fabio, the uncle of Ermanno, will pay them to buy the child that he and his wife Bianca cannot have. A fake adoption between relatives, a loophole to bypass the law in Italy. A world in which money is the only standard of value, the only thing that matters. Ermanno and Lena are two strangers that must pretend in public to be a couple and live together until the delivery. They are used to only thinking about themselves and they fight all the time. But living side by side they start becoming what they were only pretending to be.

Criada por la más adulta, seria y responsable Tina (Valeria Golino), Vittoria conoce a Angelica (Alba Rohrwacher), una chica fiestera, alcohólica y bastante menos responsable, que vive un poco alejada del pueblo. Y el espectador se dará cuenta, por el parecido físico, que la segunda es la madre en cuestión.

Young couple having to adapt at all costs to the logic of this new world, are increasingly forced to live in a dramatic detachment from reality.
Art Direction
Rocio is 20 years old and has been detained in an identification and expulsion center in Rome, pending deportation to her country of origin. During her detention Rocio has become pregnant, but she is unwilling to reveal how or with whom this has happened, preferring to remain silent. By law, pregnant women cannot be detained. So Rocio is released, four months into her pregnancy and with a temporary permit of stay on maternity grounds. Now she is free, but must also go ahead with an unwanted pregnancy.
