Alemania, años 20; un paquete de tabaco cuesta 40 billones de marcos. En Berlín Abel, un trapecista judio norteamericano y alcohólico encuentra el cadáver de su hermano en la habitación que ambos comparten. Se ha suicidado, y Abel se siente responsable de su cuñada, Manuela, que trabaja en un cabaret. Entre ambos surge una relación de mutua dependencia, en un mundo golpeado por la crisis, la violencia y la muerte.
