Karmila (Tanty Josepha), a final year student at the Faculty of Medicine, is engaged to Edo (Rudy Salam) who is studying abroad. In a youth party, Karmila is trapped by Feisal (Robby Sugara), a bad boy who then rapes her. Karmila is willing to marry Feisal on the condition that after the baby is born and old enough, he will divorce. She stayed with her aunt until she gave birth and was curt, not taking care of the baby. Meanwhile, Feisal has the opposite attitude because he is sorry and loves Karmila. The son then followed his father and Karmila continued his studies until the end. During a party to go abroad, Karmila was told that her child was sick. Karmila comes to check. Her heart melted, and she canceled her abroad and chose to be a good wife for Feisal, so she had two children. He refused Edo who returned from abroad.

Lestari stops teaching when she marries Rama who has returned from abroad. Lestari, who is an only child and an orphan, is infertile. Lestari invites Shanti to live with her. Then Rama’s parents bring Lestari to Tokyo for treatment as they still wish to have a grandchild. Rama and Shinta are left at home and begin to be intimate. Lestari is furious when she returns but she finally gives them her blessings as she cannot conceive. But due to a misunderstanding, Shinta runs away. Then Rama finds Shinta as a singer in a nightclub. Without Lestari’s knowledge, they consummate their love. Then Rama accuses Shinta of adultery and refuses to acknowledge the baby as theirs.

Because she violated the doctor’s order to not get pregnant again, Yuwono’s wife finally dies while she is pregnant with her third child. Yuwono then marries an office staff, Ningsih. Harun, another co-worker who also loves Ningsih, tries to destroy Yuwono by tampering with the office’s financial report so that Yuwono is arrested and is investigated. Harun then influences Ningsih, regarding her standing as a stepmother, so that Yuwono’s house is taken over and the stepchildren, Netty and Susy, are treated harshly. The two children run away from home, looking for their father, and are separated for a time. When Yuwono is proven innocent and is released, he does not find his children at home and goes around Jakarta to look for them. He finally finds them again.

Mbok Puspo’s cafe, at the edge of Kalimas, under Jembatan Merah or “Red Bridge”, is a meeting place for many. Mbok Puspo also sells rags for additional income while her adopted daughter, Sudiasih, runs the cafe and is the shining beauty of the place. The regulars are Ngawang, a small time thief who fails to make his wife happy; Kenanga, who becomes a prostitute to spite her husband; Siswanto, a student who does not have the courage to confess his love to Sudiasih; Pungguk the painter; a civil servant, and a postman. The love stories between Siswanto and Sudiasih; and Ngawang and Kenang are the central plots. Seeing Siswanto and Sudiasih’s love, Ngawang and Kenanga also find each other. Meanwhile, Mbok Puspo is in a dilemma when she receives a letter from her child, Sri Bidari, who was adopted by a rich family.

Mama is a complex story with two seemingly unrelated narrative threads. The first story revolves around Sanca and Anani. The second is about Ulli and Pandji, and in between the two stories is a third narrative, about Ulla, a religious prostitute and Ulli’s sister, and Suwaka.
