La película, basada en un manga de Kodansha escrito por Makoto Oshii, y producida por Madhouse y Shochiku cuenta la historia de Shuei un chico de 5º grado que desea convertirse en pianista. Al ser transferido de escuela conoce a Kinpira quien decide gastarle una novatada. Kirinpa le insiste a Shuei a tocar un extraño piano que se encuentra escondido en un bosque, obviamente conocido como “El bosque del piano” sin saber que dicho piano no emite sonido alguno. Es gracias a otro compañero, Kai Ichinose, quien pone al descubierto la broma, aunque Shuei insiste en ir al bosque y toca ese piano. Al termino de la escuela, ambos deciden ir al bosque en busca del famoso piano. Extrañamente, Shuei no logra hacer que el piano emita sonido alguno mientras que Kai sí logra hacerlo.
