Un sargento de la Unión (Brian Keith) convence a un prófugo para organizar un asalto a un banco. Durante el atraco aparece otro grupo de ladrones con los que se enfrentan. En medio de un terrible tiroteo resulta muerte un chico de nueve años. Afectados por esta muerte, los dos bandidos deciden acompañar a la madre del chico, Kit Tilden (Maureen O'Hara), que quiere enterrar a su hijo junto a su padre en Siringo, una lejana ciudad ahora localizada en territorio apache.

In the Depression, Pete and Sidney are good kids, working hard, giving money to their parents, and engaged for three years while they save to get married. Sidney's mother is looking for her own happiness, no matter how much that search harms her daughter and long-suffering husband; and, the longer the engagement lingers, the more pressure Pete's mom puts on Sidney to break it off and set her son free.
