La ganadora del Premio Nobel Marie Linde (Krystyna Janda), una mujer de espíritu libre que vive junto a su familia en la cálida Toscana, mantiene un affaire con un joven egipcio, que es el dueño del hotel de una playa cercana. Cuando un suceso atroz sacude los cimientos de la vida de ambos, Marie se propone resistir ante la histeria que se ha generado a su alrededor. Decidida a cambiar las cosas, y aprovechando que recibe un premio local, Marie pronuncia un discurso que crea una auténtico caos a nivel personal y social para el que no estaba preparada.
