En el manga original, aparece una persona inmortal en un campo de batalla africano. Más tarde van apareciendo nuevos seres inmortales que empiezan a conocerse por el nombre de "Ajin" (demi-humanos). Antes de las vacaciones de verano, un estudiante de instituto japonés muere en un accidente de tráfico. Sin embargo, es revivido y se le pone un precio a su cabeza. Así empieza su desgracia, pues tendrá que huir de toda la humanidad.
