The beginning of the 20th century. The young couple Vladislav Eschenbach and Sofia Pshebyshevskaya arrive in Tiflis, where sun, wine, ancient architecture and new impressions await them. She is the eternal mistress; it is her trade, her way of life and thinking. He understood this well before their marriage, but he cannot come to terms with her way of life. They are overcome by vanity, by the desire for understanding, and even by despair. For each of them the views of the other are nonsense, but they still try to live together. The outcome of this story seems obvious. But it takes an unexpected turn: in the life of the strange couple there occurs a moment when each of them has to resolve the single most important question…

Soviet film based on Borges' "Garden of Forking Paths." The film tells about the events that occurred on the eve of the British offensive in Saint-Montauban on July 24, 1916. A screen version of the short story of the famous Argentine classic Jorge Luis Borges (1899–1986). Course work by Alexander Kaidanovsky, as a director, at the Higher Courses for Scriptwriters and Directors at VGIK. "Pavilion" for filming was chosen a room in a communal apartment on Vorovskogo street, where Alexander Kaidanovsky lived.

Peter the Great takes a Russian man of African heritage - Ibrahim Petrovich Hannibal - under his wing as the tsar builds his grand navy. After having a disastrous affair in France, Ibrahim vows to never fall in love again, until he sees the daughter of a wealthy boyar. Peter the Great insists the two be married, but Ibrahim goes against the tsar's wishes, refusing to force her to marry him since she doesn't consent. When another man tries to marry her, however, Ibrahim's loyalties and generous nature are put to the test.
