Maja (22) lives in Stockholm, Sweden, but a death within the family forces her back to her hometown of Pajala. In Pajala, her sister Sofia lives with the troubadour Johan. After the funeral, Sofia will accompany Johan on a summer tour around Tornedalen, and Maja decides to come along. It will be a journey where questions about their origin and the future of the Tornedal will be put on their head.

Parikka, the actor once called the Funniest Man in Finland, and his troupe are about to be executed for the atrocities committed during the Civil War in Finland. Jaeger Lieutenant Nyborg, an admirer of Parikka, suspects a definite miscarriage of justice. He wants to save the actors. The forthcoming visit of the German General von der Goltz to the prison island provides him with a suitable opportunity. Nyborg suggests that the actors prepare a comical performance for the visitor and not be shot. Instead, they will be given a new trial. Preparing a comedy in the horrible circumstances, in the midst of hunger and death, seems quite an overwhelming task. Only a handful of real actors are still alive, the rest of the troupe consists of stagehands. Parikka has to use all his inventive skills to be able to produce something funny.

La película cuenta lo que sucede cuando la revolución sexual llega a una pequeña ciudad conservadora y religiosa en el norte de Finlandia, y cómo lo ven dos niños de 13 años, quienes se ven obligados a observar la liberación sexual de sus padres y sus consecuencias a corta distancia.

La acción transcurre en una pequeña comunidad sueca de idílica apariencia. Pero todo cambia cuando Jennifer, una muchacha de catorce años, asegura que ha sido violada por Alexander, su compañero de clase. El rumor se extiende rápidamente y cada vez son más los que creen que Jennifer miente. Así comienza un linchamiento en el que todo un pueblo exaltado se ensaña con una adolescente y su familia. En este ambiente embrutecido las pruebas y las resoluciones judiciales no significan nada frente a unos adultos decididos a tomarse la justicia por su mano. Nada es excesivo: lo único que importa es permanecer dentro del rebaño.
