En la década de 1930, un remoto pueblo de América del Sur quiere inaugurar su cementerio. Desafortunadamente nadie muere en el pueblo y el alcalde publica un anuncio buscando un cadáver. Recién asesinado, Ernesto es el afortunado y participa, a pesar de sí mismo, en su funeral de carnaval. Los aldeanos reunidos celebran el acontecimiento con pasión, tan intrigados por la idea de la muerte que han dejado de lado la vida.
