Basado en una historia real. Steffi, de 16 años, acaba de graduarse de la escuela secundaria y está ansiosa por su viaje de estudios a París, donde le ha prometido a su novio Fabián la noche romántica que lo ha hecho esperar desde que comenzaron a salir. Su plan de por vida para unirse a las fuerzas policiales ya está establecido, lo que significa que su vida adulta está a la vuelta de la esquina. En un chequeo médico de rutina, justo antes del viaje a París, Steffi y sus padres se enfrentan a un diagnóstico demoledor: un cáncer incurable con una esperanza de vida de menos de un año. Mientras que su madre Eva inmediatamente intenta proteger a Steffi sin poder hacer nada, por no hablar de un viaje escolar a París y su padre Frank, un sacerdote protestante, cuestiona todo en lo que él alguna vez creyó, pero Steffi está decidida a deshacerse de su destino condenado.

Once again, the "border crossing" is celebrated, as every seven years in the Upper Hessian town of Bergen. It is really turbulent at this folk festival, when the municipal boundaries are confirmed from old tradition and everything is upside down. For this occasion leaves Thomas Weidmann his girlfriend and flees because of his botched university career from the city of Berlin back to his native village. At the party, he meets Kerstin Werner, whose life has just come out of joint - her marriage is broken and her husband Jürgen on the jump to another, younger woman.
