Matthew Quigley (Tom Selleck), un vaquero californiano que presume de ser un excelente tirador, llega a Australia en respuesta a un anuncio que ha sido publicado en todo el mundo por Elliot Marston (Alan Rickman), un altivo inglés, dueño de inmensas tierras, que se ha asentado en el continente australiano para hacer fortuna.
