La historia plantea la antigua creencia de los Romanos, quienes creían que el alma salía del cuerpo en el momento del último aliento. Esta última respiración contenía el poder de curar enfermedades y prolongar la vida. La peli se inicia en los años 30 cuando el Dr. Robert Kaminsky investiga este hecho y es asesinado. Su esposa recoge su último aliento y lo esconde en una caja que a través de los años pasa por diversas manos hasta llegar al presente donde Susan Jordan, una joven enferma terminal, la tiene en su tienda. Hasta ella se dirigen un trío de personas demasiado interesadas en ella y en un libro de aquel científico...
