En un idílico pueblo costero escocés Macintyre (Peter Riegert), el enviado de una compañia petrolífera, negocia la compra de todas las propiedades de la zona para construir una refinería. Los habitantes del pueblo ven una oportunidad para enriquecerse, pero la obstinación del viejo Ben (Fulton Mackay), propietario de una playa, impide el trato. Mac sólo puede ofrecerle dinero y la playa es todo lo que Ben ambiciona. Mientras, el recién llegado se sumerge en un modo de vida que se mueve a un ritmo pausado, donde el paisaje y la comunidad lo envuelven en sus lazos.
