What is the future of cinema? In 1982, in Cannes, Wim Wenders invited many movie makers to answer this question. 26 years later, the question remains, but Wenders is now on the other side of the camera.

Anton, un joven aprendiz de monitor de natación, mantiene la ilusión de su padre ciego de que la piscina siga intacta y muy concurrida. Anton es un excéntrico solitario que sueña con navegar por los anchos mares rumbo a Tuvalu, sueño que comparte con Eva, joven de 18 años a quien le agrada mucho el carácter especial de Anton. El fallecimiento de su padre en la piscina al caerle un trozo de techo les impide salir al mar con el remolcador de Eva. El culpable de lo sucedido no es otro que Gregor, el hermano de Anton, cuyo objetivo es destruir la piscina, y de paso toda la ciudad, para reemplazarla por una nueva ciudad futurista. Anton tiene difícil la labor de salvar la piscina y mantenerla abierta, pero todo resultaría soportable si al menos se ganara el corazón de Eva.

Narra la historia de un hombre que, camino del trabajo, se enfrenta con dos policías de paisano. Como consecuencia, tiene que huir hacia las afueras de la ciudad, y lo hace en compañía de Vera, una joven a la que no conoce y de la que se enamora.

Gudrun is a teen-aged girl living in Germany during World War II. Her father is away serving in the army and her mother has sent her to a rural village to stay with her grandmother, a cafe proprietor. In that ironically idyllic setting, Gudrun frolics with a youth who yearns to join the Hitler Youth, though his father is a pastor who has been outspoken against the regime and will soon be arrested. Meanwhile, Gudrun's mother has been having an affair with an army officer. This causes grave difficulties when her husband, who has deserted and is hiding out in grannie's cellar, stumbles upon the couple.

In this black and white independent melodrama, Joe Belinsky (Eric Mitchell) doesn't know how to cope with his wife's pregnancy and his loss of an insurance agency job, and feels adrift. As a consequence of that, he takes a job working the counter of a low-cost, somewhat hip eatery, and meets a French girl with whom he has a brief affair. Though the affair ends, it has created an obsession in him - first with the French girl, and later with slim young women in general. All of them reject him, and he leaves his waiting job to prowl around for these inaccessible beauties. Meanwhile, his wife is having their baby.

Dirigido por Uli Edel ("El cuerpo del delito", "RAF Facción del ejército rojo"), el filme fue protagonizado por una jovencísima y debutante Natja Brunckhorst ("La princesa y el guerrero"), que tenía solo 13 años cuando se rodó el largometraje. Como curiosidad, David Bowie realizó un 'cameo' en la cinta, pues justamente fue en un concierto que dio el cantante en Berlín donde la protagonista probó por primera vez la heroína.
