En 1850, una caravana de colonos que pretende atravesar el desierto de Arizona para llegar a un territorio civilizado, es atacada por los indios. Siete mujeres sobreviven a la matanza y se esconden en una cueva. Pero el dilema que se les presenta es terrible: morir de hambre y sed o continuar su viaje, exponiéndose a nuevos ataques de los indios.
