This movie is based on a novel by Boris Vasiliev and describes life in a small Russian provincial town in 1940 - one year before Germany invaded the Soviet Union. The main characters of the film are ordinary Soviet high school students. They study in the Soviet school, try to be correct and ideological Komsomol activists. But not always the “correctness” suggested by the teachers coincides with the inner convictions of young souls - it is difficult for them to come to terms with the fact that their relatives and loved ones are suddenly “enemies of the people”.

One day in a life of a general during the fights of 1941...

1918 year. The ships of the military mission of the Entente countries are ready to begin an armed intervention against the Land of Soviets. Faced with betrayal and constant provocations, in extremely difficult conditions the first Council of workers, soldiers and peasants' deputies, headed by Konstantin Sukhanov, works here.

The civil war is over, and a new life is being established in the land of Khakassia. However, the remnants of the remaining gangs hiding in the taiga and terrifying the frightened locals still make themselves known. Soldier Sigdy Kirzhebekov gets an assignment to infiltrate one of the gangs and "disarm" it from the inside.

A young engineer Dmitriy Zherekhov who came to the aircraft plant is trying to prove to the director that it is necessary to switch to new methods of organizing production. He is supported by both experienced test engineer Aleksei Sedykh and test engineer Lyudmila Rudneva. Lyudmila likes Dmitriy, but his rigidity and rationalism complicate their relationship...

The film tells about the childhood and youth of the wife, friend and military ally of the founder of the country of the Soviets Nadezhda Konstantinovna Krupskaya. The main attention in the film is paid to the participation of a young revolutionary in the organization of the struggle of the workers of St. Petersburg for their rights, against the autocracy.
