How to become a star? Thorny path to Olympus. Young Zoya Misochkina in the backyard of the provincial town "Lokotki" meets two producers, Pridorozhnyy and Bolotov, from whom the prima donna Irma has just fled. Zoya passionately wants to sing, so she joins in with new acquaintances and finds herself in a large apartment with two seemingly serious gentlemen, and with close acquaintance, half-crazy touching clowns. A film adaptation of the novel of the same name by Leo Tolstoy.
The main character of the film is Prince Stepan Kasatsky, an officer, an ardent, proud young man — a big fan of the tsar. Kasatsky is going to marry, but at the last moment he learns from the bride that she was the mistress of the emperor. The prince is deeply disappointed in social life, he takes a monastic vow and leaves the capital. Faith in God was to save the soul, but passions and worldly temptations don't leave Kasatsky.

La película es una evocación continua de recuerdos y sentimientos que viajan en diferentes tiempos sin orden aparente: la relación con su madre, su infancia,...que se mezclan con material fílmico de noticiario sobre la Guerra civil española, la Segunda guerra mundial y el enfrentamiento entre la URSS y China por la isla Damanski. En la película suenan poemas escritos y recitados por Arseni Tarkovski, padre del director. Retrata un pasado que es el suyo, pero también el de un país y el del acontecer mundial.

Avdey, the husband of the tractor forewoman Fedosya leaves her for another woman. Their 18-year-old son Filipp can not forgive his father and on the day of the new wedding even tries to run over a tractor car in which the father is driving with a new wife.
