En el antiguo convento de Calatrava se instaló en 1936 un lugar de residencia para aquellos que se encontrasen cursando sus estudios religiosos. La orden de los Dominicos eran los encargados de educar a aquellos niños y jóvenes que estaban dando sus primeros pasos hacia la fe cristiana y las Humanidades. Durante los primeros meses del curso, un total de cerca de 100 personas habitaba el lugar. Sin embargo, a mediados de julio de ese mismo año, el número de habitantes del convento se había reducido a la mitad debido a las vacaciones de verano, y estas personas se ven involucradas en los trágicos acontecimientos causados por el levantamiento militar y el inicio de la guerra civil. Al principio la situación estaba llena de dudas y sospechas sobre si la disputa civil afectaría a los religiosos, pero al ver cómo ardía una parroquia cercana, las dudas desaparecen. La guerra había comenzado.
