Working in expanded modes of film and video production, Charlie Egleston (b. Kitchener, Ont., 1973) has been making films, videos and multidisciplinary work over the past twenty-five years. His films have been screened nationally and internationally at prestigious artist film venues, including; IFF Rotterdam, Oberhausen IFF, Ann Arbor FF, WNDX FF, and Media City FF where his work has been regularly showcased. His work, whether through photochemical or digital means, is characterized by an approach that considers durational experience and personal interaction as a way of presenting or enabling form. He has also collaborated with other artists in various manifestations of projection performance. Egleston is a graduate of the Film Studies program at the University of Western Ontario (HBA) and the Film Production program at York University (MFA). A recipient of awards and scholarships that include the Canada Council for the Arts, Ontario Arts Council, Social Science and Research Council of Canada (SSHRC), and numerous teaching awards, he has also held committee, jury and board positions for organizations such as the Ontario Arts Council, London Arts Council, Forest City Gallery, and the London Canadian Film Festival. Apart from his own filmmaking practice he has collaborated with other filmmakers/artists as an editor and cinematographer. He has programmed, provided artist talks, held workshops and advocated screen space for marginalized modes of film production through co-founding the London Canadian Film Festival (2002-08), founding the London Film and Video Society (1997-2001), and through serving on the founding board of the London Ontario Media Arts Association (2011-present). His teaching career started at the University of Western Ontario where he enjoyed designing a production curriculum from the ground up and has since moved to Fanshawe College, where he is currently a Professor in the Advanced Filmmaking Program. His film work is distributed by the Canadian Filmmakers Distribution Centre (CFMDC).

An introspective reflection of family life during a succession of lockdowns and part of a continuing series that reimagines familial uses for photographic imaging. Original music composed and performed by Rhaia Egleston. Camera original S8mm footage was optically printed and blown up to 16mm to achieve all inherent effects. All footage was hand-processed.

Made during COVID-19 lockdown with limited resources, "HE SAID / SHE SAID" incorporates a series of reaction shots repurposed from the artist's collection of 16mm found footage to create a reflection on the world at large during a time of introspection, concern, and anxiety. The exchange of gazes evoke a gendered and racialized undercurrent. The footage was optically printed and hand processed into a single film print using expired hi-con film stock.

A small town is riddled with a series of murders targeting couples at make-out point. The police, the mob, and individuals of Union, Ontario take it upon themselves to try and stop their .44 killer before it's too late.
The Heart of the Blackhawks

Pierre Pilote was one of the top Defencemen in the NHL for the Chicago Blackhawks, back in the original six era. Pierre along with his children share stories of his journey to the NHL and all his accomplishments throughout his legendary career.
Hunter-Gatherer

A traditional slide show disintegrates into fragmentary forms. Using re-photographic methods that mimic the mechanics of recollection, the artist's family slide images are reframed, distorted and hand-processed. An attempt to grasp a personal memory surrounding the taking of the originals.
Travel Film

The artifacts of filmed footage, photographs and postcards are used to construct a personal travelogue that consciously misrepresents the empirical truth of their contents. All of the picture and sound elements contained in this work were collected on the filmmaker's travels.
Family Portrait

Through re-photography and the combination of narration and imagery, "Family Portrait" deconstructs a family photograph and its ability to conceal a past rather than reveal one.
SEE/SAW

A film about seeing and having seen. Completely handprocessed and painstakingly edited, ‘SEE/SAW’ is comprised of a series of iris fades, commonly found in silent films to signal the beginning or end of a scene – here appropriated as a formal approach that frames the desire to see and to remember. An ultrasound recording of my first-born's heartbeat...the intensity of childbirth...a family portrait. Form is altered through lens manipulation, optical printing and hand-processing to elicit the polarities and fragility of life. A loose narrative comprised of both found and shot footage derails conventional uses of familial images and forms the residue of a looming traumatic experience. The anxieties of parenthood feed an undertow of tension that heightens awareness to the vulnerabilities of the children we bring into this world.
