La historia comienza un mes después del inicio del incidente de Sword Art Online. De las 10,000 personas atrapadas al principio, 2,000 ya han sucumbido y el primer jefe ni siquiera ha sido derrotado aún. Poco a poco, los jugadores pierden la esperanza, pero un grupo decide darlo todo e ir a desafiar al jefe en el primer piso. Es en esta ocasión Kirito y Asuna se encontrarán por primera vez.

Después de la emisión del episodio final de la adaptación de anime de Given, la cuenta oficial de Twitter anunció que se lanzará una adaptación de largometraje en 2020, retomando directamente donde se detuvo la serie de televisión. La historia se centra en Ritsuka, un guitarrista que ha perdido el interés por tocar. Un día, conoce a Mafuyu, que tiene una guitarra rota, y Ritsuka de mala gana comienza a enseñarle a Mafuyu a tocar la guitarra, pero cuando escucha la voz de Mafuyu, las cosas comienzan a cambiar de repente para Ritsuka.

To preserve Japan’s territories, Coastal Cities sprung up, one after the other. Eventually, they became Marine Cities, and along with the expansion of sea-lanes to connect them, the need arose for a sizable staff to protect the seas. At the same time, maritime jobs were becoming more popular among women. Hence, the BLUE MERMAIDS had become every female student’s dream job.

La Tierra se ha convertido en una ruina a la que llaman Nano Hazard, donde la mayoría de los humanos han abandonado toda esperanza en el planeta y han decidido vivir como datos en un mundo digital llamado DIVA. En el año 2400 y DIVA sufre un ataque de ciberterrorismo desde la Tierra proveniente de un hacker. Es entonces cuando llega la agente de policía Angela Balzac, una humana en un cuerpo sintético, la cual tendrá que viajar a la desolada Tierra para investigar el suceso. De esta manera comenzará el viaje para desenmascarar la verdad sobre el mundo y el motivo del hackeo.
