Estados Unidos, 1992. Jack Stanton, gobernador demócrata de un estado sureño, vive inmerso en la campaña para la presidencia de los Estados Unidos. Apoyado por su mujer y un grupo de colaboradores cercanos, trabaja sin descanso para conseguir votos. El coordinador de la campaña es Henry, un joven idealista negro, nieto de un líder de los derechos civiles.
