Suhardi, a post office clerk in Cipanas, moves to Jakarta. But he is accused of a crime he did not commit and is exiled to Irian. The situation forces his wife to work as a singer on the radio. But due to her health problems, she returns to Cipanas with her sister, Resna. After his wife dies, Suhardi returns, while Resna who loves to gamble takes Suhardi's daughter, Karina, and sends her off to work as a busker. Then Karina lives alone, because Resna is arrested by police. Fortunately, a family adopts her until she grows up. Karina's luck changes. She marries a tycoon and asks her father to stay with her.
Soedrajat abuses his high social status in order to womanise and becomes his rich uncle's heir despite the latter having a son, the kindly and noble Soelarsa. The uncle is disappointed with Soelarsa and considers Soedrajat the better man. Being considered high class, he is unwilling to associate with people of the lower classes. Ultimately Soedrajat falls for a beautiful young woman, Koestijah. Meanwhile, Soelarsa saves Koestijah's life while driving a truck through her village; the two fall in love at first sight. By manipulating Koestijah's father, Soedrajat arranges for her to marry him.

The film depicts the lives of two families. There is Basuki who always puts other’s interests first, while his wife, Suryati who only thinks about herself. There is also Umar with his immoral behavior, who sells his daughter Djuliah to Asnan, a loan shark, when he is in debt. This tragedy makes Ruhiyat, Djuliah’s boyfriend, heartbroken.
