La historia comienza un mes después del inicio del incidente de Sword Art Online. De las 10,000 personas atrapadas al principio, 2,000 ya han sucumbido y el primer jefe ni siquiera ha sido derrotado aún. Poco a poco, los jugadores pierden la esperanza, pero un grupo decide darlo todo e ir a desafiar al jefe en el primer piso. Es en esta ocasión Kirito y Asuna se encontrarán por primera vez.

Living by the sea, protecting the sea, and journeying across the sea…They’re the BLUE MERMAIDS! Because of a shift in tectonic plates around 100 years ago, Japan lost much of its area to submergence. To preserve Japan’s territories, Coastal Cities sprung up, one after the other. Eventually, they became Marine Cities, and along with the expansion of sea-lanes to connect them, the need arose for a sizable staff to protect the seas. At the same time, maritime jobs were becoming more popular among women. Hence, the BLUE MERMAIDS had become every female student’s dream job.

En 2026, una nueva máquina llamada Augma se desarrolla para competir contra el NerveGear y su sucesor, el Amusphere. Un dispositivo portátile de próxima generación, el Augma no tiene una función de inmersiva completa como sus predecesores. En su lugar, utiliza Realidad Aumentada (AR) para introducir a los jugadores en el juego. Es seguro, fácil de usar y permite que los usuarios jueguen mientras están conscientes, lo que lo convierte en un éxito instantáneo en el mercado.
