Creado en el estudio Soyuzmultfilm en 1959, está basado en el cuento de Alekséi Tolstoi que hizo su versión de Pinocho y al personaje lo llamó Buratino. Aunque al hacer la traducción de la animación, al protagonista lo llamaron Pinocho.
El director de la animación es Iván Ivanov-Vano que hizo muchísimas animaciones, entre ellas El caballito jorobado y Doce meses.
