Nacida el 7 de octubre de 1900 en Nueva York, ya se había labrado una filmografía importante en la época del cine mudo. Descubierta por un cazatalentos de Fox, le ofrecieron un contrato con la productora, lo que propició que debutara de la mano del maestro John Ford en Sota, caballo y rey, donde tenía un pequeño papel. Con el inigualable Buster Keaton interpretó otro papelillo en Siete ocasiones, una comedia hilarante. Pero su gran momento llegó con el cine sonoro. Otra película de John Ford, Pasaporte a la fama, supuso para ella precisamente un salvoconducto hacia el estrellato, y la primera vez que interpretaba su personaje más característico, una joven emancipada y trabajadora que bajo una pose de dura esconde un corazón de oro. Pero el momento decisivo de su carrera ocurrió cuando Frank Capra buscaba una actriz para El secreto de vivir, pues tenía claro que el protagonista masculino iba a ser Gary Cooper, para interpretar a Babe Benet una periodista sin escrúpulos. El cineasta tenía la costumbre de ver las películas de sus compañeros, y un día un western le hizo quedarse deslumbrado con la protagonista, Jean Arthur, sobre todo por su voz. El éxito de la película convirtió en una estrella a Jean Arthur, que repetiría con Gary Cooper en Buffalo Bill, modélico western de Cecil B. DeMille. Tras la interesante comedia Una chica afortunada, de Mitchell Leisen, Capra decidió repetir con ella en Vive como quieras, sobre una caótica familia cuyos miembros hacían individualmente lo que siempre habían deseado. “Para interpretar a Alice, el único miembro cuerdo de los geniales idiotas volví a llamar a la más espléndida actriz de la época, Jean Arthur, la de la voz ronca”, explicó Frank Capra. Tan apropiada le parecía para su cine que volvió a ficharla para Caballero sin espada, sutil denuncia de la corrupción política. Al contrario que Capra, otro gran cineasta de la época, Howard Hawks, comentó que no había quedado muy contento con ella, tras dirigirla en Sólo los ángeles tienen alas.
Durante los años venideros, a Jean Arthur parecían haberla encasillado en comedias, como Demasiados maridos, El diablo burlado, El asunto del día. Precisamente fue una comedia, El amor llamó dos veces, de George Stevens, la que le proporcionó su única nominación al Oscar, pero al final le arrebató la estatuilla Jennifer Jones. Desencantada porque los papeles que le daban eran todos muy similares, Jean Arthur se tomó un descanso de cuatro años, en los que estuvo ausente por completo de las pantallas. Rechazó incluso repetir con Frank Capra, que quería darle el papel protagonista de ¡Qué bello es vivir!, su película más recordada. Sólo volvería al cine para rodar Berlín Occidente, del inigualable Billy Wilder, y para interpretar a la protagonista de Raíces profundas, mítico western de George Stevens. Mary es una joven atolondrada a quien las fuertes presiones familiares y sociales le obligan cada vez con más fuerza a tener que casarse.
