El astronauta Mark Watney, botánico e ingeniero mecánico, es dado por muerto y queda atrapado en el planeta Marte cuando la tripulación del Ares 3, a causa de una emergencia, debe evacuar su lugar de aterrizaje y regresar a la Tierra.
