Fontamara is a village in the Marsica, forgotten by all but God and its inhabitants are called 'cafoni' (boors). Berardo Viola wants to marry Elvira but only after gaining enough money to buy some land and in order to reach his aim he has the idea of going to a great city. When Maria Grazia is raped by the fascists, Berardo and Antonio decide to leave Fontamara and go to Rome. Here they are swindled by a lawyer and afterwards they are invited by an antifascist to a restaurant where they are arrested by the police because of some subversive papers they had.

Sabata, un antiguo Mayor del ejército confederado, llega a Hopsonville para reclamar a Clyde el dinero que le debe. Clyde no puede pagarle y esto provoca que ambos se asocien temporalmente. Esta unión no complace al banquero Sweeney y a un ex buscador de oro.

México, 1867. Durante la revolución de Benito Juárez contra las tropas de Maximiliano de Austria, uno de los líderes del pueblo planea robar un ingente cargamento de oro en poder del despiadado coronel Skimmel que servirá para financiar la revuelta. Para ello deciden contratar al hombre más adecuado para la empresa, un mercenario conocido por su puntería que responde al nombre de Sabata.
