Director de cine británico nacido en Londres. Hijo de Herbert Asquith, Conde de Oxford y primer ministro británico entre 1908 y 1916, desde muy joven se interesó por el cine, ambiente que conoció de primera mano cuando su padre, tras finalizar sus estudios en Oxford, le envió a Hollywood para que conociera de cerca la industria cinematográfica. Tras colaborar como ayudante de dirección de H. Bruce Woolfe y Walter Summers y escribir una serie de guiones, abordó su primer largometraje, Estrellas fugaces (1928), en un momento difícil, pues la época muda estaba dando paso el cine sonoro y esta circunstancia afectó al acabado de la película. En los años treinta concreta su buen hacer en dos películas muy diferentes. Por un lado, Tell England (1931), un relato histórico sobre el desembarco de las tropas franco-británicas en la península turca de Gallipoli en 1915, que ofrece una interesante imagen de los acontecimientos; por otro, Pigmalión (1938), una excelente adaptación de la obra de George Bernard Shaw, en la que un profesor de fonética llamado Higgins (Leslie Howard) adopta a una chica sin cultura (Wendy Hiller) con el fin de transformar sus modales y enseñarle a hablar correctamente. Con el autor teatral Terence Rattigan colaboró en varios proyectos, entre los cuales destaca especialmente Coqueta hasta el fin (1939) y The Browning Version (1951). Durante la Segunda Guerra Mundial rodó diversos cortometrajes y documentales que le permitieron concretar dos largos muy bien conseguidos sobre el conflicto, We Dive at Dawn (1943) y The Way to the Stars (1945).
