La historia comienza un mes después del inicio del incidente de Sword Art Online. De las 10,000 personas atrapadas al principio, 2,000 ya han sucumbido y el primer jefe ni siquiera ha sido derrotado aún. Poco a poco, los jugadores pierden la esperanza, pero un grupo decide darlo todo e ir a desafiar al jefe en el primer piso. Es en esta ocasión Kirito y Asuna se encontrarán por primera vez.

Meliodas y Hawk terminan en Sky Palace que existe sobre las nubes, donde todos los residentes tienen alas. Meliodas es confundido con un chico que cometió un crimen y es arrojado a la cárcel. Mientras tanto, los residentes están preparando la de defensa contra una bestia feroz que se despierta una vez cada 3.000 años. Pero los Seis Caballeros de Negro, un ejército del Clan Demonio, llegan y quitan el sello a la bestia antes que los residentes de Sky Palace puedan prepararse.
